What if everyone was disabled? Could we fail to achieve what a human being is destined to achieve? These are the questions that everyone should reflect on at a time when the disabled continue facing all kinds of discrimination.
“Almost everybody has a disability. It only depends on the degree of the disability. Putting on glasses, for instance is a sign of disability. Did God create us to have some things hanging in front of our faces? Obviously no. Putting on glasses is also a disability and there are more disabilities,” observed President Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika last Friday while inaugurating this year’s Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) Flag week at Mzuzu State Lodge.
He could be right.
And one can notice reality in Mutharika’s sentiments as he continued: “Disability is indeed not inability. This is an expression we need to believe and work on and not just declare in vain. …....If President Roosevelt of America managed to win the US presidency while on a wheel chair, with a disability, why should we not give equal chances to people with disabilities also? They too can equally perform just like everybody else. I therefore appeal to all Malawians to be aware of this and take a positive step in mainstreaming disability issues.”
